Saga is very much an agricultural area, and in late summer, asparagus is one of its prized crops.
The plants are usually grown in these plastic covered sheds, like a lot of other vegetables in Japan.
The spears are mainly picked when thin, and the asparagus is allowed to green off, rather than be protected from the light. Japanese like the bitterness of darker green vegetables.
